English Copy Editor and Proofreader

Sherbrooke, QC

Reporting to the Manager, Language Services, the English copy editor and proofreader is responsible for carefully editing and proofreading pharmaceutical/healthcare advertising and informational copy (print and digital), sales presentations and slide decks, packaging, internal and external company communications, visual aids, and more.

The position is currently remote; however, the model could shift to a hybrid setup as circumstances owing to COVID-19 evolve.


  • Meticulous, thorough, and rigorous method
  • Interest in and understanding of natural sciences
  • Ability to self-start and work as well cooperatively as independently

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe markup functions


  • Bachelor of Arts or higher degree in English literature, linguistics, journalism, communications, or English studies
  • 2–5 years of experience as an editor in an in-house or a freelance capacity
  • Advanced (native) proficiency in English
  • A certificate in professional editing from a Canadian university is preferred
  • Fluency in French
  • Certification with Editors Canada is an asset
  • Ability to translate from French into English is an asset
  • Experience in an advertising setting is an asset

Main responsibilities

  • Editing copy for grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, and mechanics of style
  • Checking for formatting, typographical, and content errors
  • Verifying content accuracy in accordance with product monographs
  • Adhering to client and/or brand style specifications
  • Recording client and/or brand style preferences
  • Applying established style guide recommendations
  • Correcting and cross-checking citations 
  • Canadianizing content
  • Making defensible and judicious editing decisions
  • Comparison and noncomparison proofreading for typographical and transcription errors
  • Maintaining house editorial style guide
  • Structural and stylistic editing (on occasion)
  • Corresponding with and vetting freelance editors and proofreaders
  • Liaising with project coordinators, project managers, medical writers, graphic designers, web designers, and creative copywriters
